Description
Serial No. 2474
Step into the earliest chapter of Gillette’s adjustable razor innovation with this ultra-rare Gillette Serial Toggle, stamped #2474. Unlike the later retail production Toggles, which used the toggle lever for both blade loading and release, the Serial Toggle’s lever was designed both as a cleaning mechanism and blade loading operation. This means the razor still functions perfectly for shaving and adjusts just like a production Toggle, but the lever opens partially to allow maintenance and cleaning.
That subtle difference tells the story of a razor in transition — Gillette was testing ideas, refining mechanics, and perfecting what would become the beloved retail Toggle. While the mass-market versions (1958–1960) are renowned for their convenience, the Serial Toggle holds a special place as a prototype-era design, stamped with a serial number instead of the later date codes and produced in extremely limited numbers.
This razor had once been replated in 24k Gold, giving it a commanding presence that matches its rarity. The cap does show some imperfections on the doors, but the razor remains both functional and collectible — ready to be admired in a display or even put to use for a truly historic shave.
Owning a Serial Toggle is like holding Gillette’s experimentation in your hands — a working piece of shaving history and a true crown jewel in any serious collection.
